KEEP IT SIMPLE

Tools & supplies

Flat work surface

Supports sharp, accurate creases.

Use an existing clean flat table or desk for origami; no specialized granite plate or workbench purchase needed.

STEP BY STEP

Put it together

  1. Make the base

Fold paper in half lengthwise, crease and reopen. Fold it in half across its width; keep the folded edge at the top.

  2. Fold the roof

Bring both upper corners toward the center crease, making a triangle above a rectangular strip.

  3. Raise the brim

Fold the front bottom strip upward along the triangle. Turn over and fold the other strip up. Tuck projecting corners around the edges.

  4. Open to a square

Open the pocket at the bottom, bringing the two lower corners together, then flatten into a diamond.

  5. Fold again

Lift the front bottom point to the top. Turn over and repeat. Open the resulting bottom pocket and flatten to another diamond.

  6. Open the boat

Gently pull the two upper outer points apart. Flatten the center, then open the hull slightly so the boat stands.

Good to know

  • Use the linked diagrams if a fold is hard to picture.
  • Ordinary paper softens in water; display it dry or try only a brief float.
