STEP BY STEP

Make it

  1. Chill

Chill the milk, soda and fruit before starting.

  2. Cut

Cut watermelon into spoon-sized pieces. Mash a little extra and strain off 3 tablespoons juice.

  3. Combine

Put watermelon and optional fruit in a bowl. Add juice and milk.

  4. Finish

Pour in soda just before serving. Stir gently, add optional ice and divide into two bowls.

Good to know

  • This is one modern variation of hwachae, not the only traditional preparation.
  • Add soda at the last moment so it stays fizzy; serve immediately.
  • Refrigerate perishable leftovers promptly.
